The Scrub Life

We’re breaking records, here, in Wilmington! My friend, Brian, posted this as his FB status that describes the way the weather has been the last week:

Between the snow, rain, and wind, I had to drive home through the thickest fog I’ve ever driven through! Visibility was about 10 feet! Driving home from work has been pretty dangerous!  The night before, it had snowed its but off and I drove 15mph all the way home!

But today was most extreme of them all! The threat driving home this morning was black ice, but the temperature was even more dangerous. When I left work this morning, I left with two jackets on, two hoods, gloves, a scarf, and sweatpants over my scrub bottoms. Why? Because it was 3 F! Yes, THREE DEGREES!!! And that was just the air temperature! The wind chill? Oh, just -17 F!

“Its Brisk, Baby!”

Everyone always says how lucky nurses are to wear such a comfortable uniform. Its true, its pretty comfy. But the downside is that there is nothing to them! The wind goes right through the fabric and straight to your bones! Brrrrrr! Usually, when its cold out, I’ll wear tights under my scrubs, but sweatpants are thicker. Depending on the weather tonight, I might triple layer with tights, scrubs, and sweatpants! Even though the roads are slick, at least the drive to work is a scenic one…

I’ve been bundled up, even in the house! Dad thinks its hilarious that I sleep with my pom pom hat on!

Lucky for me, I’ve been whipping up lots of warm goodies in the kitchen! Oh, and the forecast tomorrow? -14 F! Just great!

WP_005224On the plus side, I’ve been keeping warm with yummy foods! I’ve been hanging out at dads place alot and my eating has been great! I think its because I’m having what are called “meaningful meals.” When you begin refeeding after an eating disorder, they say to have “meaningful meals.” This means to eat meals consciously, carefully, and with meaningful people. For about 2 weeks now, I’ve eaten three meals a day and snacks!

What an accomplishment! Work is going well and I’m even eating meat, again! I eat some sort of protein at least once a day! This is a huge breakthrough for me! For instance, I organized the freezer and found two 10 oz pork loins. Which I used immediately! One night, I marinated the loin in hot pepper jelly, cooked the loin and used the juices, along with teriyaki sauce and red pepper flakes to make a stir-fry! The following night, with a jar of roasted red peppers in the fridge, and a sale of frozen veggies at the store, I was still craving pork! I seasoned the last pork loin with Italian WP_005231seasoning and thyme, and while steaming it, browned the outside of the loin. Once cooked through, I removed the loin and let it rest. I added a box of chopped frozen spinach, thinly sliced onion, garlic, seasoning, and sliced roasted reds to the pan. I thinly sliced the resting loin and I ate my meal out of bowl, and made a tasty porchetta sandwich with melted light provolone for pops! YUM!

Good Feeling Friday

Today was an all around feel good day, right from the very start!

Sometimes the hardest part if working out or going for a run, is actually getting out of bed. It is most definitely November in Delaware and my body knew it. My alarm went off at 730 and it took almost 20 minutes to convince my body to get out of bed. It was so toasty and warm!

WP_004530I finally threw the covers off and ran to my robe. I suited up in pink and black, this morning, and layered up with leggings and tights, as well as gloves and a head band. I knew that preparing for the chill would keep me more motivated. The one negative? My running pants stayed up but the rights underneath kept sliding down… Ha!

At least I was warm. I used my iPod to complete about 2 miles of refrain running to grab some coffee. 2 miles for coffee, Sammy? That must be some good coffee! Oh it is! For the past 3 weeks, I have made it to Fresh Thymes on Friday mornings for their banana fosters coffee! While there, chatting with Jenn and Steph, the fab chicks that run the cute corner cafe, I gave dad a call and he met me for breakfast and coffee.

After browsing the menu, it was hard to decide what to get! Everything sounded amazing! We decided on “The Julian.” I may have been a bit sneaky in this selection. Dad didn’t bring in his glasses and couldn’t read the print and he asked me to read what was in the wrap. I may have just said “sausage” rather than “seitan sausage.” Whoops!

None the less, we ordered “The Julian,” and chatted up the ladies, while sipping on our coffees. The smell of our food cooking was fantastic, and I kept peaking over at the griddle to check out what was awaiting us! The wrap was huge! Thank goodness we split it! Served with a slice of apple and tabbouleh salad, we dug into our breakfast of seitan sausage, sauerkraut, apples, onion, spinach, and spices. Delicious!

After dad raved about the wrap, I announced, “Ladies and gentleman, my father has eaten tofu and seitan in less than 24 hours!!!” which got some smiles and chuckles from the hungry breakfast folk.

I was stuffed for a long time after my half wrap! My day was kicked off with tons of good feelings! I was full and knew it! I had breakfast with my dad! Dad had eaten two healthy meals in less than 24 hours! I had accomplish 2 miles in November! I couldn’t wait to see what the rest of the day would bring!

Dad drove me home, after breakfast, and I immediately began to tidy up. Another thing to make me feel accomplished! I met up with Barry at the Farmers Market, where I picked up a bunch of goodies. After the radishes the other night at work I picked up a pack of radishes for snacking, which I pretty much finished off by the end of the night. I also picked up a bunch of orange and red bell peppers!  Throughout my shopping, I picked up a few things for Beauty! Yes, Rachel Ray, apparently, makes dog food, and, yes, that is doggie ice cream, both of which, Beauty loved! What a spoiled little pup!

WP_004535It was a day of smart snacking and tasty treats. Frank, for dinner, whipped up pasta and seafood sauce! How could I resist? I heated up a package of Tofu Shirataki noodles and topped it with the sauce! MMMM! I sliced up a bell pepper and used that to pick up the remained gravy at the bottom of the bowl!

The night is closing with some hot chocolate and ginger snaps- shocker!

Crazy Herbal Concoctions

So I’ve read a decent amount of articles regarding immunity and what to drink when you have a cold and so on. Every family has their own family remedies… “ancient Chinese secret,” “old Polish remedy,” “Irish shenanigans…” Here are a few my family utilizes:

for fever: a slice of onion in the bottom of your white socksWP_001506

(I don’t know how this draws out a fever, but okay…)

any cold: hot tea with a shot of whiskey

(I don’t know how this helps, but a get a decent buzz…)

Today I tried a cold relief tea that I read about:

Hot lemon tea, raw honey, and cayenne pepper… SPICY!

Does your family have any remedies?

This morning began with a shake. I was excited fr some Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Shake, but it didn’t taste much like Cookie Dough, and beleive me… I KNOW cookie dough! WP_001504

The rest of the day was soup central! When we are sick, Mrs. Grass soup gets whipped out every time! I basically gave Beauty the noodles and kept the broth to myself. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always been amused by this ball included in the box. I pulled this out and all I culd sing was “I’ve got the golden nugget!” (in the Willy Wonka tune)…

Dad came over a bit later baring gifts… Hot and Sour soup! YUM!

I had such a rough time getting with the program today. I have soo much work to finish! I barely left the bed today…

Now, for some NyQuil and shut-eye.
